Karthigai Deepam on 27 November 2012

Kaarthigai Deepam is celebrated in southern India, especially in Tamil Nadu as the festival of Lights and is an extension of Deepavali festival. It is on the day when the full moon is in conjunction with the constellation Karthigai (Pleiades) or the Krithikai star in the Tamil month of Kaarthigai (November and December) for 10 days. It is very similar to Bhai Duj or Raksha Bandhan celebrated in other parts of the country in which the sisters pray for their brothers’ well being and the brothers in turn, promise to safeguard the sisters in times of trouble. On this day, people clean the houses. In the evening, they draw kolams (rangoli) in the front of the house. This festival also involves the lighting of lamps in the homes, temples and the workplace. These are a symbol of holiness in Indian culture. The lamps are arranged near the doors and windows and also in the balconies. In some houses, they double the number of lamps every day from the day of Deepavali and this way, they end up with a number of lamps on the day of Kaarthigai Deepam. The idea behind this festival is to keep away bad things from life and welcome the good and holy things of life. As a part of the celebration people in Tamil Nadu wear new clothes and exchange gifts and sweets and try to meet all their relatives and friends during the festival. It is celebrated in a special manner in Thiruvannamalai. In 2012 Karthigai Deepam will be celebrated on 27th November 2012.
