Diwali is celebrated across the world by Hindus on November 3, 2013 (Sunday)Diwali means 'arrangement of lights in a row'.

1) Dhanteras - Nov 1st - Friday - Also known as Dhan Tryodashi. The auspicious day to buy Gold, Silver, Steel.  
2) Naraka Chaturdasi - Nov 2nd - SaturdayAlso known as Kali Chaudas / Choti Diwali - Lord Krishna and Goddess Satyabhama destroyed Narakasura on this day
3) Diwali - Nov 3rd - SundayLord Ram returned to Ayodhya after spending 14 years in forest. Also known as Badi Deepavali / Lakshmi Puja. Celebrated on Amavasya
4) Govardhan Puja - Nov 4th - Monday - Also known as Bali Pratipada / Padwa / Kartika Shudda Padyami
5) Bhai Dooj - Nov 5th - Tuesday - Also known as Bhai Bheej / Bhhaya Duj - Sisters invite their brothers to their homes.

Why Diwali is Celebrated?


Diwali is celebrated for many reasons. It is the day on which Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya after spending 14 years in forest. The whole country is decorated with lights to welcome Lord Ram.

Goddess Satyabama wife of Lord Krishna destroyed Narakasura on Deepavali. People celebrate the victory of good over evil. Many will pray Goddess Lakshmi to grant them wealth. It is also the beginning of new year Vikram Samvat in Gujarat.

Diwali Rituals:


On Diwali, People will wake up early in the morning, take oil bath, wear new dress, do puja in their home by offering varieties of sweets to god and burst crackers. 

The courtyard will be decorated with colourful Rangoli and flowers. Devotees will go to temple to have darshan of God.

Greetings and gifts will be exchanged with neighbours and relatives. At night, whole nation will decorate their house with diya - the traditional lamp.

The preparation for Diwali Festival begins months in advance. Tickets in trains, buses, flight would be sold off the day booking starts. Textile shops will be flooded with people to buy new clothes in the months leading to Diwali.
