Today, 23rd March 2013, Pakistan celebrated the 73rd Pakistan Day also known as Youm-e-Pakistan or Pakistan Resolution Day or Pakistan’s Republic Day.
The Day commemorates the passage of the Lahore Resolution on 23rd March 1940, which laid the foundation for the creation of Pakistan. This historic resolution called for the creation of an independent State consisting of the Muslim majority areas of united India.
The day also commemorates the adoption of the first constitution of Pakistan during the transition of the Dominion of Pakistan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on 23 March 1956 making Pakistan the world’s first Islamic republic.The day begins with special prayers for the progress and prosperity of the country, followed by a 31-gun salute in the federal capital and 21-gun salutes in each of the provincial capitals.
On national public holiday, the national flag will is hoisted on important public and private buildings across the country and all Pakistani missions abroad.
On this day, several dignitaries visit the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi to lay floral wreaths and pay homage to the father of the nation.
Pakistan Television, Radio Pakistan and private channels air special programmes to highlight the significance of the day, along with various aspects of the lives and work of Mr Jinnah and other leading personalities related to the independence movement.
