Anil Kapoor & Colors all set for the Indian adaptation of international hit series, 24!

American Television’s award winning and longest running espionage themed TV drama series 24, is all set to be readapted for Indian Television. Colors TV and Anil Kapoor Film Company are gearing up for its local launch which will pave way for a new hybrid genre that would be a mix of fiction and reality.

Anil Kapoor rose to international prominence with his movie Slumdog Millionaire. He also appeared in the eighth and final season of 24 playing Omar Hassan and is responsible for bringing the property to India. Kapoor has not just brought the rights of this hit series but is also producing the series. Delhi Belly fame director Abhinay Deo is directing the series and Rensil D’silva of Rang De Basanti fame will indite. The trio along with Manisha Sharma, head of Colors programming team, is searching high heaven to make sure every aspect of their show is simply perfect.

This ambitious project is already the talk of the town. Let’s try to unearth reasons for the same.

Ensemble

Local version of 24 will mark debut of veteran actor Anil Kapoor on Indian Television. He will step into shoes of Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) agent Jack Bauer (originally played by Kiefer Sutherland) which is supposedly to be rechristened as Jai Singh Rathod for the desi version.  It seems that a lot of thought went into naming the character as the team wanted a name that aptly captures the essence of Jack Bauer.
Multifaceted actor Anupam Kher will be seen as a RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) officer. Ajinkya Deo, famous hindi / marathi film actor and Abhinay’s brother, will be donning the role of a RAW agent. Pooja Ruparel aka of chutki of DDLJ fame will be seen playing an aide to a minister while Gurpreet Saini, who made his debut on TV with MTV Reality Stars will be a part of anti-terrorist unit.
Four new faces who will also make their big debut with this adapted series are Sapna Pabbi, Kiran Srinivas, Priyansh Jora and Aradhana Jagota. Other film industry names doing rounds are Faezeh Jalali (seen in films like Slumdog Millionaire and Kurbaan), Adhir Bhatt (seen in Mission Kashmir, My friend Pinto, U Me aur Hum and Eklavya), Rahul Singh (seen in Delhi Belly, Zubeidaa and Tere Bin Laden) and Priyanka Bose (seen in Johnny Gaddaar, Guzaarish and Love Sex aur Dhokha)
News is that the show is also expected to launch more than 50 fresh new faces on television. Now that’s a biggie……

Preps
Workshops were organized for the cast and crew before the actual shooting schedule. The intent was to provide rigorous training to the actors for their roles and most importantly to break the ice. Workshop concept is habitually used by filmmakers but it is uncommon for small screen. We will have to wait to watch how this comfort building exercise has affected on-screen chemistry of these actors

Looks
Anil will be downplaying his style quotient in this show for a change. Mumbai based designer Kunal Rawal has been roped in to design the guy next-door look wearing linen shirts and jeans instead of the trademark tuxedos and suits

Studio
Anil has launched his own studio named Stage 1 in Andheri for shooting of this show. The inaugural shoot took place on March 21, 2013. Why not? With Kapoor name on the cards, one should be ready to come across the unmatched

Collection of Firsts
  • 24 was not just a first of its kind show in USA but will be first of its kind for Indian TV as well
  • This iconic, globally successful show is being adapted in another country for the first time
  • It not only marks debut for Anil Kapoor but is first small screen production project of Anil Kapoor Film Company
  • Abhinay Deo also marks his TV directorial debut with this show
  • Abhinay will be directing his brother Ajinkya for the first time
  • The show also marks TV debut for many actors listed above
Forecasts
According to Abhinay “I think 24 will help break the stereotype of our regular shows and also garner an entire new set of audiences for Indian television”.

As per Anil “In the last few years television has come so far. Before it was seen as a bit cheesy and dull. Now, people watch international shows and demand that quality for our output. Of course the content has to be relevant to India, so I think this venture is the best of both worlds. A show of this scale will stand-up and be noticed. It will draw people’s attention from solely the movie screens and who knows who may turn up in a TV show next?”

Raj Nayak, CEO Colors, is of the opinion that 24 is a show that brings Anil Kapoor’s mass appeal and Colors’ mass audience together to create history in Indian Television. It’s an honour to bag 24 for Colors; in fact it’s a reward for our efforts and our firm belief in continuously providing disruptive content to our audiences. I am confident the show will set new standards in entertainment and further strengthen connect with Indian audiences”.

Expectations
Los Angeles Times had characterized the series as “an epic poem, with Jack Bauer in the role of Odysseus or Beowulf”. This is a huge legacy and to stand true to it the show makers will have to create an unmatched viewing experience for its viewers. The channel is taking a huge leap from the existing crime genres and that too with re-adaptation of a show that has millions of viewers.
The show is slated to go on air in the summer of 2013 and we expect a mega launch before it hits air. Will this show be able to witness unprecedented success in India?  Well, this will be soon put to task. Colors has managed to successfully deliver adaptations of international shows like Bigg Boss, India’s Got Talent, Khatron Ki Khiladi and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa in the past. We wish the same success to 24 as this will be another redefining moment for Indian Television viewing.
